Her dad, Richard, was head of the state Department of Commerce under Governor William Milliken. A Republican, he was also the president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan between 1988 and 2006.
Apart from that, her mother, Sherry, served as an assistant attorney general under Michigan Attorney General Frank J. Kelley.
It has been reported that Sherry and Richard divorced a long time ago, and at that time, Gretchen was just ten years old. Following that, Gretchen and her siblings moved with their mother to Grand Rapids.
