She was a nationally ranked competitive diver, and in 1991 earned All American Athlete honors. She finished her studies with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.

After graduation, Lara joined the NBC page program, volunteering to help other reporters while gaining experience. After a while, she became a part of WDEF-TV located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, an affiliate of CBS, where she worked alone in her division, serving as reporter, producer, cameraman, editor, and news-van driver. Just a year later, she joined News 12 Long Island, and after receiving massive attention for her work for the News 12 Long Island, Lara was recruited by WABC-TV. In 1996, she was given the anchor spot for the 3 AM newscast, and she was the one who covered the TWA Flight 800 crash for the station, which turned out to be her big break.

Thanks to her success at WABC-TV, Lara was brought to ABC as a national correspondent, and progressed to the role of a co-anchor, making her debut in 2002.
