Following Hazel’s demise, Ontario Premier Doug Ford released a statement writing she was the true definition of a public servant and himself considered fortunate to be called among her friend circle.

Records show her friend, Doug Ford, after the mayor’s death, extended her condolences to Hazel’s family, especially her children Peter, Linda and Paul.

Hazel’s supporters gave her the nickname “Hurricane Hazel” for her outspoken political style referencing the Hurricane of 1954.

As per CBC, fans compared the politician to a hurricane after she took decisive action during an explosive train derailment in 1979.

Tributes continued to pour in for the politician on January 29,2023 morning, including from Toronto Mayor John Tory, who said he spoke with her in recent weeks.

During her ruling, the politician set an agenda that saw all of Mississauga, not just land close to populated areas, open for business to developers.

The politician began a three-year term as the first chancellor of Sheridan College.

After 36 years as Mississauga mayor, the politician left a legacy unlike any other in Canada’s seventh-largest city.

As per records, the former mayor turned down a formal appointment as a special adviser with a $150,000 salary.
