A young man has died in a single-vehicle crash in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.

A man, 22, has died after his car smashed into a pole in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to the scene at St Georges Rd in Fitzroy North around 11:30pm on Wednesday.

Police believe the vehicle collided with the pole, rolled, and eventually stopped outside a church.

The young man was the only person in the car and died at the scene. 

Investigations into the cause of the crash is underway. 

St George’s Road remains closed in both directions between Reid and Church Street. 

Trams on Route 11 have also been impacted by the accident. 

Anyone who witnessed the crash has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
