Young Aussies struggled to answer the question ‘what does Anzac stand for’ when a social media star put them on the spot.

Anzac Day is held annually on April 25 and is a day of remembrance observed in both Australia and New Zealand, commemorating the anniversary of their military involvement in the Gallipoli campaign during World War I.

Some 8,700 Australians died during the 1915 Gallipoli campaign, where 75,000 Anzac troops fought in perilous conditions for eight months, in a battle that has defined Australia and New Zealand’s national identity.

In a video posted to social media on Monday, Ethan Roman went to a busy shopping centre and quizzed young Aussies about the acronym’s meaning.

Ethan asks a young woman: ‘All right, what does ANZAC stand for?’

The young woman pauses before answering: ‘Australian National … f**k I don’t know, man.’

Ethan then asks a young man the same question.

The young man replies, ‘ANZAC? Australia, harmony’ before being interrupted by Ethan who reminds him of the question.

‘Oh, Anzac,’ the young man says. ‘Okay, so start with Australia right. Australia, um, England, um, New Zealand, come together, come together!’

Ethan laughs at the answer before the young man claims he has ‘never learnt that’.

Two young women are then asked the same question. The pair look to each other for help in answering correctly.

‘Australia, New Zealand,’ the first girl says before looking at her friend for assistance.

‘Army Corps,’ the second girl answers.

Many have criticised the young Aussies for not knowing the correct answer.

‘I live in Australia and they [young Australians] only think Anzac is a day that only Australians lost their lives, it amazes me,’ one person wrote.

Another claimed that young people can memorise a TikTok dance, but still have no idea what Anzac means.

‘This is terrible and disappointing I’m lost for words,’ a third person chimed.

A fourth added: ‘Not sure if it says more about them or our education system. Either way it’s disgusting.’
