Yankees’ Austin Wells has big game but start on Opening Day still in question

Noteworthy items from the Yankees’ Grapefruit League action on Thursday.

Wells & good

Austin Wells continued to swing a hot bat late in camp, going 2-for-2 with a double, walk and an RBI.

It was also notable that he caught Nestor Cortes in his final start before Opening Day, though with the Astros starting a left-hander next Thursday, Aaron Boone was noncommittal on whether the left-handed hitting Wells will also get that start.

Zach attack

When Yankees infielder Jahmai Jones took his first at-bat of the day in the second inning, his picture on the video board was a head shot of Jets quarterback Zach Wilson.

A picture of Jones replaced it during his second at-bat.

Caught my eye

Non-roster right-hander Dennis Santana, competing for a bullpen job, struck out Austin Riley, Matt Olson and Marcell Ozuna after walking the first batter he faced in relief.

“He’s been good and today was really good,” Boone said.

Friday’s Schedule

Luis Gil will start against the Mets at 1:05 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field, with Will Warren following in relief in both pitchers’ final audition for the fifth-starter role.
