Musk: 'It Is Tough Sledding, But I Think We're Doing the Right Thing Here'

This Brett Baier sit-down with the entire DOGE team, fearless leader and all, is really something to behold. All I can say is it’s a shame there’s not another venue besides Fox because it will also be ignored because of Fox and the ideological purity of the opposition.

What a tragedy that is, for surely among those who reflexively scoff, there are a few who still retain some reasoning faculties that could be activated if only one’s information can access them.

The entire thirty minutes is here when you have time.

But I want to hit the highlights if you haven’t seen them, so that you’re aware, amazed at what’s been found so far, pissed off royally about it, and have them in your pocket to share with others, believers and skeptics alike.

The first thing Baier does is ask Elon, ‘What is the goal?’ And the answer is to ‘cut the deficit by a trillion dollars.’

Elon sees that as half of the deficit we’re running, or, in terms of total federal spending, to drop the cost of government from seven trillion to six, reducing spending by 15%, which he sees as ‘really quite achievable.’

All this, Elon says, without touching or adjusting anyone’s anything – as he says, without affecting ‘any of the critical government services.‘ It’s all done by clearing out the chaff.

The ‘waste, fraud, and abuse’ phrase sounds so familiar that it could be a college chant, it’s been so overused. But these guys have already found billions of it in their first month and a half of turning over bureaucratic rocks and rifling through desk drawers.

BILLIONS ALREADY

Baier asks Elon specifically what the one thing is about the enterprise they’ve found that’s astonished him the most, and Elon immediately answers

The sheer amount of waste and fraud. It is astonishing.

And then he rolls into this astonishing anecdote.

He addresses Social Security, which has been a source of much uproar and targeted progressive pot-stirring, particularly now that seniors must physically change their banking info at an office instead of over the phone.

Witless senior citizens are being frightened into believing that a billionaire four hundred times over is now forcing them go to the Social Security office to change banking information only so said billionaire four hundred times over can steal Granny’s $1500 check each month.

Those same frantic Meemaws and Pawpaws who blithely send all their savings to the fellow on the phone from Publishers’ Clearing House so they can claim their ‘sweepstakes win,’ but now are terrified of the foreign billionaire should be forced to listen and then take a pop quiz afterward to make sure it stuck.

This statistic is absolutely appalling – 40% (!) of ALL CALLS to Social Security are fraudulent.

Another revelation, with an astonishing number from one of the team members, is on accountability. If you write a check or swipe a credit card, you have some way of tracking who it went to; on a check, you can write the purpose (often the business name will tell you), and on an online card statement, you can make notes. If you need to dispute something, you can contact that entity.

The DOGE team explains the federal government has no tracking ability for money as it heads out the door to…wherever.

The money’s just gone.

Another gobsmacker was the IRS. Naturally, everyone has a scowl the second those initials pop up, but when you find out that, on top of however many tens of thousands of agents POTATUS hired to track down your $625 Etsy payments, they also have 1400 people on staff whose only job in life was to hand out ‘laptops and cell phones’?

Surely not, you say.

ALAS, ‘TIS SO

…Small Business Loans

– The ways that the government is easily defrauded is that the computer systems don’t talk to each other

– there were over $300 million of small business administration loans that has been given out to people under the age of 11

– The oldest American is 114. So it’s safe to say if they’re ages 115 or above, they’re fake

 – The youngest recipient of a small business administration loan is a nine-month-old

Social Security fraud

– One of the  key tricks that the fraudsters pull is that they will use the fact that someone is marked as alive,  just that social security number is marked as alive in social security.that then get disability and unemployment insurance for a dead person

– This is because the databases don’t talk to each other

– This is happening all the time at scale…

It is a business-like, dispassionate presentation of what they’ve found, how they’ve found it, and why this benefits everyone in America.

And they wish they could go faster.

It also performs a great service to the selfless DOGErs who volunteered to work with Elon on this monumental, thankless task because it allows them a voice instead of continuing to be painted as evil and conniving caricatures by Maxine Waters types and hysterical progressives who are frantic at losing the gravy train.

To a one, they are thoughtful, focused, brilliant patriots working their butts off for this country.

I wish they’d done this interview sooner because, judging by the honest reaction of several anti-Trump, anti-DOGE friends of mine on X, it has made a difference in their perceptions of DOGE itself. I have to give them credit for the admission, too.

The DOGE goals are straightforward and task-oriented.

With nothing but wins for the American people.

As Elon says during the interview, this is a revolution and a necessary one. He talks about the ship of state – of how desperately vital this is to the future of America.

If we don’t do this,’ Elon says bluntly, ‘We’re sunk.
