Firefighters were able to save a woman from a house fire in Brisbane’s north overnight.

It was just after 9pm when police and firefighters arrived outside the Virginia home.

Neighbours reported hearing screams as the fire took hold.

Some tried to break into the home to aid the occupants, one neighbour said.

“They’d smashed the side glass door in, and the moment the door came down you could see the smoke inside the house,” the man told 9News.

9News understands a 37-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair lives at the home.

She was unable to get to safety on her own, but emergency services were able to save her from the fire.

The woman was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital.

Three police officers were also treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Fire investigators arrived on the scene later and are expected to be there most of the day. A crime scene has been declared.
