A woman was unloading her car about 1am today when she was allegedly approached and threatened by a man with a machete.
He allegedly then stole the car, which police located shortly afterwards.
The police helicopter unit tracked the car as it travelled about 42km to Frith Street in Gisborne, where the driver allegedly dumped it and ran, jumping over residents’ fences.
He was arrested on Beech Court less than an hour after the alleged carjacking.
Police allegedly found a machete in the car.

The 22-year-old Echuca man has been charged with aggravated carjacking with an offensive weapon, threat to inflict serious injury, aggravated assault, driving at a dangerous speed and possessing a controlled weapon.
He is expected to appear at Sunshine Magistrates’ Court later today.
Social campaigner Les Twentyman this morning told Today something needs to done about the number of weapons being carried in the area.
He held a weapon amnesty in the area 20 years ago and is calling for another.
“We got 52 weapons back in two hours. You know, and it never went any further,” he said.
