A woman has died and a man has been hospitalised after a house fire in Sydney’s Inner West.

Emergency crews were called to a house fire on Westbourne Street in Petersham at 11.50pm on Friday.

Fire and Rescue crews extinguished the blaze while police officers evacuated surrounding homes.

The body of an 82-year-old woman was found inside the building. She has not yet been identified.

A second person, a man aged 57, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition. 

There have not been any other reported injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
