A woman is in a critical condition at Gold Coast University Hospital after being stabbed in a Tweed Heads carpark.

Police allege the 48-year-old was involved in an argument with a 37-year-old woman at a unit block in Seymour Street about 1.40pm today.

After the older woman made her way to the carpark, it’s claimed the younger woman knocked her to the ground before allegedly stabbing her several times.

Officers who were first on the scene provided first aid to the injured woman before she was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Gold Coast University Hospital.

The woman is in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

The 37-year-old was said to have run away from the scene but was arrested nearby and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station, where she remains in custody.

Police found a knife a short distance away, which has been taken for forensic examination.

A crime scene at the unit block has been established and inquiries are continuing.
