A woman has died after a tow truck she was travelling in left the road and slid down an embankment in NSW’s Snowy Mountains.

Police said they were called to the Snowy Mountains Highway at Kiandra, south-east of Talbingo, around 7:30 pm last night after receiving reports of the crash.

The tow truck had been towing a ute when the accident occurred.

The woman had been travelling in the cabin of the truck and died at the scene, while the driver was taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious condition after becoming trapped.

The 29-year-old female owner of the ute and her young son escaped with minor injuries.

They’ve been taken to Cooma Hospital to be checked as a precaution.

The crash forced the closure of the thoroughfare for more than eight hours.

All lanes of the Snowy Mountains Highway opened about 4am with all diversions lifted.
