An elderly woman has died after accidentally setting herself on fire at a bus stop.

It’s understood the 93-year-old woman was trying to light a cigarette when the accident occurred last Friday, the West Australian reports.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Kenwick, southeast of Perth.

The woman suffered serious burns and was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital where she was in a critical but stable condition on Friday night.

The 93-year-old succumbed to her injuries the following day.

Quick-thinking witnesses and nearby medical staff have been praised for their response in the moments after the woman accidentally set herself alight.

Nurse Adriana Di Chiera, 25, was one of the first to arrive at the scene.

‘When I was out there, her hair and body were on fire, I was shocked. She only had her shoes on… it was horrible,’ she told the West Australian.

The matter is not being treated as suspicious but a case of accidental self-harm.

Police were at the scene the following day collecting evidence from a nearby bin.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
