One woman has died and a second is in a serious condition after they were allegedly stabbed by a stranger on an Adelaide street.

Police have arrested a man in connection to the incident that happened on Lydia Street at Plympton around 3.40pm today.

Police said the two victims were not known to the offender.

A woman in her 40s was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

A second woman, in her 30s, died at the scene.

The suspect, a 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is expected to be charged with murder.

Police have closed down the entire street and told people to avoid the area.

Witnesses are urged to contact police.
