Police said a 24-year-old woman was running on the Merri Creek trail near Fitzroy North about 10.45 am yesterday, when she was allegedly attacked by another woman.

The victim received serious head injuries, and her alleged attacker fled the scene.

Police described the attack as unprovoked.

Bystanders came to the victim’s aid before she was taken to hospital in a non-life-threatening condition.

A 29-year-old woman was arrested in the area a short time later.

She was set to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
