The body of a man has been found at a train station carpark, with the cops arresting another man leaving locals nearby at the early morning police operation. 

NSW Police officers were called the area after the body of the man was found in the carpark located at Station Street, next to Wollongong train station, on the NSW south coast, around 7.20am on Sunday.

The deceased person is understood to be a 68-year-old man who lived in the local area, however he is yet to be formally identified.

‘A post-mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to determine cause of death and confirm identity,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

A 37-year-old man was taken into police custody at 10.40am before officers along with homicide squad detectives set up a crime scene.

The man who is currently at Wollongong Police Station has not been charged

Earlier, on Sunday morning police officers descended on the area before cops began taping off the multi-level carpark. 

Forensic detectives were also at the scene as they scoured the location and collected evidence. 

Terrified locals watched on from a local church and cafe located opposite to the train station, as police blocked off the front entrance.

Pastor Josh Hammann said locals were left shocked by the scene of police cars that arrived at the street. 

‘We understand something really sad has happened,’ he told the ABC.

‘It’s very much a police matter but our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved.’

Staff at the train station are understood to have found the body of the man on level one, near the western side of the carpark according to reports from the Daily Telegraph.

The area is known to be frequented by people who sleep rough.  

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
