WNBA players ‘bracing’ for work stoppage with pivotal meeting looming

The WNBA appears headed toward a labor stoppage after this season as negotiations between the league and Women’s National Basketball Players Association have been lagging up to this point.

Players were hoping to avoid a potential job action when they opted out of the current collective bargaining agreement in October. They believed a year would be ample time to hash out the details of a new deal before the CBA expires after this season.

But with the Oct. 31 deadline only 108 days away, WNBA players are “bracing” for a work stoppage if the pace of talks doesn’t ramp up exponentially in the near future, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations who were granted anonymity so they could speak openly about the situation.

WNBA players, union executives and league officials are set to meet in Indianapolis on Thursday in what’s expected to be a pivotal point in the negotiating process.
