Second on the list is the US, whose nuclear arsenal is only marginally smaller than Russia’s.

The first-ever nuclear power, the US has been armed with atomic weapons since 1945.

Most estimates place the current American stockpile at around 5500 strong.

According to the January 2023 entry into FAS’s Nuclear Notebook, the exact number is 5244, down from 5428 the year before.

That decrease makes the US the only nuclear-armed nation that is decreasing the size of its stockpile; all others are either maintaining or increasing them.

The ACA puts the US’ total warheads at 5550, although its data is from late 2021.

As with Russia, over a thousand of them have been retired and will be dismantled.
