Gwen Shamblin Lara’s preaching empire came crumbling down on May 29, 2021, when she died in a plane crash along with her husband Joe Lara. According to Esquire, their son-in-law Brandon Hannah and four other Remnant Fellowship leaders died with them as they crashed in Percy Priest Lake in Tennessee. Lara was flying the aircraft to the “We The People: Patriot’s Day” MAGA rally in Florida at the time.

This left Shamblin Lara’s daughter, Elizabeth Hannah, to take over her ministry. Elizabeth lost her mother, stepfather, and husband in the crash, and had to go on with a brave face and little to no grief shown. She seemed intent on stepping into her mother’s leadership role but is simply listed on the leadership team at Remnant instead of as the church’s leader. According to the HBO documentary, “The Way Down,” Elizabeth only attends services virtually instead of in person. Shamblin Lara’s son, Michael Shamblin, previously involved at the church, left Remnant altogether since her death (via Esquire).
