When you think of a typical Australian shopping street, parked cars occupy the prime public space in front of the shops.

But researchers believe we could create a place that’s good for business and beautiful too.

Ten car-centric streets from across the country have been reimagined to illustrate the benefits of reallocating space to people, shoppers, diners, riders, children, prams and the mobility-impaired.

Here you can see some before and after looks at how our streetscapes could look with fewer cars.
