A massive house explosion has rocked a western Sydney suburb and destroyed a townhouse, with multiple people injured and one person unaccounted for.

The blast occurred on the second level of a townhouse in Whalan in Sydney’s west, with Fire and Rescue NSW called to Waikanda Crescent just before 1pm.

Emergency services responded to a call about an explosion in a unit.

The call said windows were smashed and people could be heard screaming.

A spokesperson for Fire and Rescue NSW told Daily Mail Australia that one person remains unaccounted for and residents from at least 12 surrounding houses have been evacuated.

Ambulance NSW told Daily Mail Australia five people were taken to hospital after the blast – three transported to Mount Druitt Hospital and two to Hawkesbury District District Health Service. Their current condition is unknown.

Fire and Rescue, ambulances, police, gas and energy personnel are on the scene.

The spokesperson said several people have been taken to hospital.   

The house had ‘major damage’, with a neighbouring home also impacted, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.

Whalan resident Kathleen Morris said the sound of the explosion was massive.

‘I heard a big bang and the whole house shook, everybody came out of their house, wondering what had happened,’ she said.

One nearby resident told the Daily Telegraph she was lying on her lounge when she heard a massive explosion.

‘I raced outside thinking someone put a fire bomb on the veranda or something,’ she said.

‘Three of my windows were smashed out (from the impact).’
