A single mum has died after she was allegedly hit by a truck while teaching her 17-year-old son to drive.

Leonia Picone, 55, was in her Ford Mondeo on Cowpasture Road North in Wetherill Park, in Sydney’s west, with her son, who was on his L-plates, at about 6.25am on Wednesday.

They were just metres from his workplace at Smithfield-Wetherill Park Industrial Estate, when the truck allegedly bumped her vehicle multiple times.

She got out of the car to knock on the truck driver’s window to ask him to stop, and called emergency workers to report the minor collision.

While police were on their way, the truck allegedly moved forward and hit her.

Paramedics tried to save the mother’s life, but she could not be revived.

Her son was treated at the scene for shock, but was otherwise uninjured.

Later on Wednesday, Ms Picone’s family gathered at the scene to pay tribute.

Her sister Ronelle Cameron was too upset to comment, but her brother-in-law Kevin Cameron described her as a ‘good mother’ who was caring for her parents, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The truck driver, 51, who parked 150m down the road from the scene, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
