Bennett has rejected the late offer from Parramatta to return to South Sydney in 2025

  • Bennett is off contract after setting up new franchise the Dolphins
  • Was in demand with Sydney clubs Souths and Parramatta
  • Has made a decision after final pitches from the clubs during Magic Round

NRL super coach Wayne Bennett has signed a three-year deal to return to South Sydney as head coach despite an 11th hour pitch from Parramatta to secure his services.

The Dolphins mentor is off contract and had become the most prized signature in the NRL with both Souths and Parramatta sacking their respective coaches to clear the decks for his signing.

Bennett was reportedly wooed by Parramatta officials during Magic Round just days before they sacked coach Brad Arthur after 11 years at the helm.

That pitch had Souths officials nervous that Bennett would backflip on his verbal decision to return to Redfern, but the master coach has honoured his word and signed a three-year deal to return to South Sydney until the end of 2027.

‘Yes, I’m going back to Souths,’ Bennett said.

‘The deal is done, I am pleased we have sorted things out and we can now focus on the rest of the season.

‘Parramatta did make contact with me. I respected their wish to keep it confidential, but they made the decision to speak about it.

‘I never left anybody in any doubt that my preference was to go back to South Sydney and I’m very pleased that’s happening.’

The Rabbitohs are expected to make a formal announcement on Tuesday.
