Authorities are warning residents of regional South Australia that tampering with road signs is a criminal offence after several signs had tape applied to spell the word “No”.
At least two speed signs on the Barrier Highway in Burra and another on Worlds End Highway in Robertson were vandalised earlier in the week.
Black tape was used on the 110km/h signs to make the first two numerals appear to look like an N to create the word “No”.
An SA Infrastructure and Transport Department spokesperson said the two signs the government was aware of had since been repaired.
”Road signs and infrastructure are very important for driver safety,” the spokesperson said.

“Maintenance crews are currently checking other signage in the area for vandalism.”

Defacing road infrastructure is a criminal offence in the state and carries a maximum penalty of $5000 or one year of imprisonment.
It is unclear if the vandalism is a reference to the No campaign in the upcoming Voice to parliament referendum, to be held on October 14.
