The waterway is a popular swimming spot among locals and tourists alike, especially for children, who are known to jump from the pier.
“We were in a plastic little boat, it was only about three metres long… we had already lost a heap of these fish to these sharks,” he said.
“So we were really, really curious. A lot of them had been bitten in half.
“We thought we’d have a look to see how big these sharks were.
“Just unbelievable… it was tug-of-war.”
Hassett said the shark was dragged to shore where they snapped a photo and unhooked the beast before letting it go.

“I would say they’re in plague proportion at the moment,” Hassett said.
“Watch your dogs and kids in the water, these guys don’t discriminate.
“She swam off into the night after a good cuddle.”
