Albanese and the Referendum Working Group said the question would be: “A proposed law: To alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?”

Earlier today, Albanese said the Voice proposal was a “modest request”.

“It’s incredibly constructive, and I give such praise to the leaders of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have done the work in a way that is so patient,” he said.

He again rebutted the suggestion that the Voice would change the “primacy” of the parliament and its power to make laws.

“This should be above party politics,” he said.

“If this doesn’t happen now, when will it occur? When will it happen?”
