Two people have been taken to hospital after a car fire in one of Sydney’s major arterial tunnels sparked extensive traffic delays.
A car caught alight in the southbound tunnel of the Eastern Distributor at Woolloomooloo shortly after midday.
As a result, the Eastern Distributor was forced to close in both directions along with the southbound lanes of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.
The southbound lanes of both tunnels have since re-opened.
Some motorists were left waiting in their cars for an extended period of time.
NSW ambulance have attended the scene and transported two patients to St Vincent’s hospital.
Motorists in the area are being warned that traffic is “very heavy” in both directions and those travelling south should avoid the area or delay their trip.
Commuters are urged to “exercise care” and to allow extra travel time until traffic eases.
