Australia’s consumer safety watchdog has issued an urgent recall for a popular bike, warning a manufacture flaw creates a serious safety risk to riders.

The steerer clamp for certain Brompton T Line bikes can become loose, the regulator warned, causing the handlebar support and fork to become misaligned, leading to a loss of steering control.

‘There is a risk of accident and serious injury if the rider loses steering control while the bike is in use,’ the ACCC said on Friday.

‘Consumers should stop using the bikes immediately.’

Affected consumers can have the repair carried out free of charge at a Brompton dealer, the watchdog added.

‘Consumers who have a bicycle torque wrench and are comfortable completing the repair themselves should follow the instructions on the recall website to tighten their steerer clamp hinge bolts.

‘Consumers who are not comfortable completing the repair themselves or who may not be able to visit a Brompton dealer can contact Brompton for assistance in arranging a repair.’

The affected bikes were manufactured before June 21, 2024 and have a serial number ranging from 2104190001 to 2406070001.

The bikes were sold nationally and internationally between February 1, 2022 and July 24, 2024.
