Curious locals even thought the item could be from disappeared passenger flight MH370.

The Australian Space Agency took over investigations from police, assessing the object, which was found 220 kilometres north of Perth.

It was soon determined the object was most likely a solid rocket motor casing from an Indian rocket.

Officials had to engage with global counterparts about the next steps forward, including whether the debris would need to be returned to its owners.

With a growing number of organisations interacting with and exploring space, there’s a worry more debris could come hurtling back down in the coming years.
