9News understands the university has today upped its security and stationed guards at campus entrances as students return to class.

Students and staff affected by yesterday’s incident have been offered help from the university’s support services.

The state counter-terrorism command team is investigating a 14-year-old boy from the Inner West, who was arrested when he showed up at the same hospital for treatment for hand injuries.

His mental health is being assessed and no charges have been laid.

Counter-terrorism command assistant commissioner Mark Walton alleged the boy had been dressed in camouflage uniform and had been armed with a knife.

“A motive or ideology, importantly, has not been determined at this time,” he said yesterday.

Walton did, however, say there did not appear to be any religious ties.

While the boy is not believed to be known to the 22-year-old, he is known to police and government agencies.
