An Uber driver who was stabbed allegedly by one of his passengers has sent a warning to other drivers.

Lovepreet Singh was allegedly stabbed in the neck, hands and torso while helping a passenger with their luggage in the garage of a home in Melbourne north-east.

“One moment I thought I almost died,” Singh told 9News.

“I think he wanted to kill me and take my car away.”

Singh spent four days at the Alfred Hospital, his wounds requiring more than 30 stitches.

“I begged him that I have a family, and he replied that he’s doing it for his family,” Singh said.

Singh alleged the attacker produced another knife from his pocket before he managed to run from the home and raise the alarm.

He said since the attack he has not wanted to leave his house.

Singh warned other drivers to have their personal safety at the front of their minds.

A 29-year-old man was arrested by police several hours after the incident.

He has been charged with intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury and assault with a weapon.

The charged man has been remanded on bail and will appear in court in August.

Singh’s friends and family are fundraising to pay for rehabilitation.
