Two tourists have died and a third has been injured in a dramatic tree collapse at a popular Bali tourist spot.

Videos shared on social media showed the moment a large tree or branch fell on a path in the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud yesterday.

In one video, at least a dozen people are seen running away from the spot where it falls. In another, people can be heard yelling “what the f—” and “help”.

Police said two women, from France and South Korea, died and a second South Korean woman was being treated in the Kenak Medika Hospital.

Ubud Police Chief Commissioner Gusti Nyoman Sudarsana said officers were investigating and coordinating with the South Korean and French consulates.

The protected jungle area in the south-east of the Indonesian island is popular among local residents for wedding photos, as well as among international visitors.

About 600 macaques live in the forest sanctuary, swinging from the tall nutmeg trees and leaping about the famous Pura Bukit Sari temple, and are considered sacred.
