An emergency declaration was sparked after emergency services were called to Collin Avenue in Edge Hill about 1pm (2pm AEDT) after reports of an altercation between two drivers.
A witness claimed a man left his white hatchback to approach a black Audi, exchanged words and then shot at the vehicle, Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham said.
“There was a collision between two vehicles … the Audi hit the rear of the white vehicle,” Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham said yesterday.
“The man in the black Audi was helped back in the car by a female.
“We’re working towards a theory, it’s most likely people who know each other. It’s certainly not road rage.”
There was a major police response with nearby streets and a school placed into lockdown after an emergency situation was declared.
It was revoked a few hours later, about 3.45pm (4.45pm AEDT) but residents in the surrounding area were told to remain indoors.
The black Audi was eventually found at a house on Pease Street, near Edge Hill State School, with significant damage to the front of the car.
The man and woman involved were not at the address but occupants in the house are assisting police with inquiries, Chetham said.
“We found a number of items of interest,” he said.
“This is an unusual one where someone’s been wounded and hasn’t stuck around.”
Chetham said a number of occupants of the Pease Street address are known to police.
Detectives quickly launched an investigation into the incident, appealing for information on three people of interest.
Two people were located this morning, one has a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.
Investigations are ongoing in relation to a third person believed to be involved in the incident.
Police assured the community there is no threat to the public and urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
