Two people have been killed and four people have been rushed to hospital after a multi-car crash on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Emergency services were called to reports of a crash on the northbound lane of the M1 Motorway near Nabiac, about 30 kilometres south of Taree just before 10am today.

Police arrived at the scene to find that a Nissan SUV and Toyota Landcruiser towing a caravan had collided, sending the Nissan into a nearby truck.

Two people in the Nissan died at the scene.

They are yet to be formally identified.

A 42-year-old man, a 43-year-old woman, and two children, aged eight and nine, were all treated by paramedics on the scene.

All four were then taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

The truck driver was uninjured and was taken to Manning Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.

A black chihuahua that was in the Nissan was uninjured and was believed to still be in the area.

Police have asked for help in locating the dog, which they say answers to the name Armani.
