The cheeky thoroughbreds took to the streets of Surfers Paradise for about 20 minutes as onlookers watched on.

At least 10 people tried to capture the horses, which travelled about 10 kilometres up the Gold Coast Highway.

No one was injured and the horses were quickly retrieved.

Hundreds of people gathered on Surfers Paradise beach this morning to watch the barrier draw unfold.

This is ahead of the annual race day at the Gold Coast Turf Club this weekend.
