Two people have died and a woman is fighting for life after a three-vehicle crash in a major Brisbane tunnel.

A woman is undergoing surgery tonight as police appeal for information about one of the cars involved in the deadly collision in the Legacy Way tunnel northbound at Mount Coot-Tha.

Police said debris was spread for hundreds of metres in the crash about 3.10pm and the tunnel remained closed into the night after causing long delays during peak hour.

Inspector Steve Crabbe said the male driver of a black Audi S3 had died along with the female passenger of a silver sedan, while the driver remained in critical condition.

The critically injured woman was undergoing surgery tonight and a fourth person, who was in a white van, suffered serious injuries but was expected to survive, Crabbe said.

“The scene was over several 100 metres involving three vehicles,” he said.

“And obviously, traffic delays, extensive traffic delays were involved.”

The inspector said the tunnel, which would be checked for damage, was expected to reopen at some time overnight.

He called for anyone with information about the crash to contact police, “particularly in relation to the driving manner of the black Audi S3”.

The Forensic Crash Unit was called to the scene and police were reviewing CCTV footage.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman earlier said a woman was in a critical condition with chest injuries and had been transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
