Who's Got the Joy?

I always try to pick a lighter subject for the last post of the day.

Part of that it is the fifth or sixth post I will have written (this is my sixth), and part of that is that it’s nice to end the day on a lighter note.

Well, this is a pretty light post, although there is a serious point to it.

We are now almost two weeks into the second Trump era, and despite the fact that Democrats are still trying to rig a few elections here and there, it’s clear that Trump’s victory has sunk in. Even if the Democrats aren’t reconciled to the results, the new reality has broken the gloom that Americans and others have been laboring under for years.

Dare I say it? There is JOY! in the air.

The Trump dance is peak Donald Trump. There is something infectious about it that is ineffable. It is an expression of Trump’s grandiosity and his self-deprecating humor if that makes sense. He is the center of attention and gets others to move to his rhythm, but the rhythm itself makes fun of his awkward white man moves.

People love it. Accompanied by an offbeat song that is, after all, a catchy gay anthem, it bundles up the contradictions of Trumpism and his offbeat coalition that is united not ideologically or demographically but by a common desire not just to Make America Great Again but Make America Fun Again.

What is striking is how international the Trump dance has become, with Japanese, Greek, Australian, and other TV personalities openly making the moves on the air. Football players in America are doing the Trump dance in the end zone, and European footballers are doing the same when they score a goal as well.

Aside from being fun, what is important about this phenomenon is how suddenly the spell of Trump Derangement Syndrome is broken. It is OK to be happy that Trump won, or even if you didn’t vote for the guy you recognize that it is perfectly normal that some people did.

For over a decade most Trump supporters felt defensive about it. You could be canceled for supporting Trump. Family members or friends might disown you, and even your employment might be in peril.

Now? A lot of lefties are still in that mindspace, but as Justine Bateman has so eloquently shown, we no longer have to walk on eggshells. The spell of the mob has broken.

We can breathe again. The blue-haired harpies are still there. The masked nutcases broken by COVID are still around us. The Pravda Media still screams about Trump and “norms,” but the mob is dispersing.

You can see it in the spread of the Trump dance: normal people don’t care what these idiots think. We are liberated.
