A victim of the double fatal car crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge has been identified as police appeal for more footage as they try to work out why the head-on collision occurred.

Jamal Choukri, 44, was on his way to work in Botany yesterday afternoon when a blue Hyundai i30 veered into his lane and hit his car head-on.

Choukri, originally from Morocco, was a truck driver and had recently moved to Sydney.

He was one of two killed, with the driver of the blue Hyundai, a 51-year-old man, also dying at the scene.

Police said initial inquiries suggested the blue Hyundai was headed northbound when it veered into the southbound lane at 1.40pm yesterday.

The initial crash also saw two other cars and bus collide.

NSW Police said initial inquiries suggest one car headed northbound veered into the southbound lane, causing an initial crash that caused several other cars to collide, including a bus at about 1.40pm.

Dashcam footage that came to light yesterday showed the i30 veering across the lane right before the collision with Choukri’s car.

The crash has led to calls for better safety on the iconic roadway.

“You can end up in the wrong lane, and before you know it, you’re in a head-on collision,” Professor Raphael Grzebieta from the University of NSW told 9News.

“A barrier would prevent that.”

The NSW government is confident the current system is adequate.

“Our road safety experts provide advice to government and we adhere to that advice,” Transport Minister Jo Haylen said.

Police are trying to track down more dashcam footage of the incident and are urging for anyone with any footage to contact crime stoppers.
