“Since coming to government we’ve strengthened our ties with Victoria’s largest trading partner,” the spokesperson said.

“We don’t always agree on everything, but we have a genuine relationship built upon strong social, cultural and economic bonds.

“Official international visits by members of the Andrews Labor government strengthen our state’s global ties and create lasting benefits for all Victorians.”

It marked the first visit by an Australian federal minister to China since 2019.

Andrews last visited China in October 2019, when he signed the state up to the global infrastructure initiative, Belt and Road.

The agreement is a $1.5 trillion initiative which involves the construction of infrastructure, mostly co-funded by China.
