Tragic twist for couple killed when truck crashed into home

A 70-year-old truck driver who ploughed into a home near Warnambool in regional Victoria, killing an elderly couple, is yet to be questioned by police.

But today, Carmel and Jim Madden who died in the incident have been remembered for their community spirit – as volunteers at local footy games, for Lifeline and the Lions Club.

Their deaths have been felt by many in the local area, including long-term family friend Sue Lane.

“It’s been really hard, it’s like losing parents,” Lane told 9News.

Carmel and Jim were in their bedroom when a tipper truck ploughed into their Tower Hill home yesterday morning.

Jim would typically be out early in the stables looking after his racehorses but he returned home to check on his 80-year-old wife who had just had surgery when they were killed. 

“You can’t believe something like this could happen, a tragic way to die,” Lane said.

The couple leaves behind three heartbroken children who have been left “devastated” by the loss.

“Jim and Carmel devoted their life to their family and have given us all so many opportunities and were immensely proud of us all,” the family said in a statement.

The family hopes the couple’s legacy and love for racing lives through a racehorse born on their farm moments after their deaths. 

“We hope this little foal becomes a cup winner for Jimmy and Carmel,” Lane said.

The 70-year-old truck driver remains at Warnambool Base Hospital with minor injuries.

The Portland man will be questioned as police continue to investigate how the crash happened.

It is understood the 70-year-old doesn’t have a criminal history relating to driving.

Police are exploring whether he suffered a medical episode at the time of the crash.

Officers are waiting for the results of a blood test which could take up to a week.
