The two teens, both aged 14, were allegedly inside a caravan annex at BIG4 Hervey Bay Holiday Park on Corser Street in Point Vernon about 9pm yesterday when the attack happened.
One of them has since been charged with murder.
Detective Acting Inspector Craig Mansfield said police had “more questions than answers” in their investigation so far, but that they were confident with the murder charge.
”We’re satisfied at this early stage that the offence of murder is the right charge,” he said.
“It’s absolutely concerning. It’s a tragic event.”
Inspector Mansfield said police were trying to work out how the teens came to be with the man.
“What we do know is there a very limited relationship between this male deceased and the 14-year-old female,” he said.
“Seemingly they had only just met within a matter of hours, or the day leading into the incident.”
Inspector Mansfield said the man had recently been transient, living out of a car that was found at the scene.
He said the teenager arrested was found near the caravan park shortly after the man was allegedly stabbed once in the back.
The man was treated by paramedics at the scene and rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital but died from his injuries upon arrival.
No weapon has been found, but Inspector Mansfield said the witness was assisting police.
He said police had CCTV to examine and were looking to speak to a number of people who were in the caravan park at the time.
The accused is expected to appear before a children’s court tomorrow.
Anyone with information that could help police investigations is urged to come forward.
