Tragedy as driver is killed by item that fell from the back of a truck on Melbourne freeway

A driver has died in a freak accident on a major freeway in Melbourne’s northwest.

A white truck was driving towards Altona on the M80 Ring Road at about 4pm when a metal object fell off the back.

The item then shot across the freeway and hit a car travelling towards Greensborough, causing a fatal crash. 

The driver of the car was declared dead at the scene and is yet to be identified.

The truck driver didn’t stop following the incident and was last seen travelling towards Altona.

It was not known if the driver was aware that the incident had occurred.

Police are looking to speak with the driver and has urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.

All Greensborough-bound lanes were closed between Ballarat Road and Sunshine Avenue following the collision.
