A baby has died at a family home-based day care.

Paramedics rushed to the Balinga Dr home in Skye in south-east Melbourne shortly after 2pm on Wednesday.

A neighbour heard screams from the home shortly before emergency services arrived.

The cause of death is currently unknown.

A major crime scene was established at the home, which remained cordoned off on Wednesday night.

Police were seen speaking with a woman outside the home.
