Residents have been warned to stay inside and lock their doors after shots fired in the Townsville area overnight prompted police to declare an emergency exclusion zone.
9News understands the town of Kirwan, near Townsville in Queensland’s north, is currently in lockdown and a suspected gunman in a stand-off with police as local residents report hearing “multiple shots fired” in the region.
Officers made the emergency declaration, under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA), just before 9pm last night, with the situation believed to be continuing on Monday morning.
It’s understood police negotiators are currently on the scene attempting to diffuse the situation.
At this stage, there has been no confirmation of any injuries.

Boundaries have been set up around Dalrymple Road, Kern Brothers Drive, Sandstone Drive, and Golf Links Drive in Kirwan.
Residents within the exclusion area have been told remain indoors with doors locked, with police also requesting those outside the zone to stay there, including keeping any aircraft landed.
