A Belgian tourist has died after crashing into a street sign while riding a motorised scooter on a North Queensland island.

The 26-year-old was riding the scooter on Horseshoe Bay Road on Magnetic Island eight kilometres off Townsville‘s coast when she hit the street sign about 3pm.
Queensland Police said members of the public gave her first aid while emergency services arrived.

Police said she was taken to Townsville University Hospital where she had emergency surgery.

“The rider succumbed to her injuries around 9pm,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“Authorities are working with DFAT to notify family in Belgium.”

Magnetic Island is a small island popular among tourists.
