Josh Dobbs is expected to make his first career start for the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Titans signed Dobbs off of the Detroit Lions’ practice squad last week and are opting to start him over their 2022 third-round draft pick quarterback Malik Willis.
Ryan Tannehill, the Titans usual starting quarterback, underwent ankle surgery last week and is out for at least the regular season, and likely the postseason if Tennessee makes it in.
Willis has yet to throw a touchdown pass or surpass 100 passing yards in any of his three starts in place of the injured Tannehill. He has rushed for 123 yards and scored his first rushing touchdown last week against the Houston Texans. The Titans are 1-2 in his three starts.
Besides Tannehill, the Titans have also ruled out Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, and Pro Bowl running back Derrick Henry is doubtful to play.

Starting Josh Dobbs is a Hail Mary for the Titans, who don’t need to win Thursday night in order to have a win-and-in game against the Jacksonville Jaguars next week. Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing is working as hard as he can to get Dobbs ready.
“He’s a very bright young man and he’s working really hard to pick everything up,” Downing said. “There’s some familiarity and carryover in the terminology from where he was in Cleveland. I was with (Browns coach Kevin) Stefanski in Minnesota so I can try to give some ‘Spanish to English’ to him a little bit. I think as long as we can identify what he’s comfortable with, that’ll determine the volume.”
Dobbs has appeared in six NFL games, all with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has 45 total passing yards and one interception. He also rushed for 31 yards.
