Tigers grounds crew member gets injured on field — then flips off the camera

A groundskeeper at Comerica Park didn’t seem to want his 15 minutes of fame when he apparently injured himself before a TV broadcast took interest in it, leading the unknown staffer to flip off the camera.

The Giants’ NBC Sports Bay Area broadcast had just returned from a commercial break after the seventh inning when it focused on the unnamed groundskeeper being tended to by the Tigers’ medical staff for an injury between innings of a 4-3 win over the Giants on Wednesday.

They then cut to another angle for a better look at what was happening from a camera positioned along the first baseline before transitioning to another shot of an EMT who was making his way toward the injured person.

When the broadcast returned to the front-facing shot and lingered for longer than the person liked, he eventually gave the camera the middle finger before someone treating him put their hand over his gesture.

“Can’t do that,” Giants play-by-play man Dave Flemming said after realizing what had happened.

“You do not see this very often, I hope he’s OK,” Flemming had said when the broadcast came out of the commercial break. “A part of the grounds crew, he’s hurt.”

“Hope it’s just a leg and something not too serious,” analyst Hunter Pence said.

The injury did require a cart to remove the injured worker.

The game resumed after a delay, and the Tigers came away with the win.

Wednesday wrapped up a three-game series between the Tigers and Giants, with Detroit completing the sweep.
