Baltimore City Council Member Ryan Dorsey said: ‘Just received a call from BPD about a shooting at the Morgan campus. Five victims, none critical.

‘It’s believed there were three shooters firing into the crowd, none apprehended or ID’d at this time.’

The shooter was firing from a seventh-floor dorm room window which has now shattered, police told WJZ

The entire city of Baltimore was put under tactical alert.

Police said: ‘BPD is on scene of an active shooter situation in the 1700 block of Argonne Drive. We’re asking everyone to shelter in place and avoid the area.’

The college told students to avoid Thurgood Marshall Hall, which is a co-ed residential hall with a dining facility attached, as well as the Murphy Fine Arts Center.

Concerned family members are being told to avoid the campus area and report to the Safeway parking lot at 4401 Harford Road, where a BPD officer will on standby.

At 6.30pm on Tuesday, students were celebrating the annual crowning of this year’s ‘Mister & Miss Morgan State University.’

The event was taking place at the Murphy Fine Arts Center – which is the location that the college told people to avoid following the shooting.

The arts center is also next to Thurgood Marshall Hall. And the university homecoming celebration is scheduled for Saturday.

No one is in custody.

FBI Baltimore said: ‘The FBI has personnel on the scene offering assistance to our partners Baltimore Police at Morgan State University tonight. People in the area are still being asked to shelter in place.’

Morgan State University is the largest of Maryland’s historically black colleges and universities – and it became a higher education institution in 1975.

In 2022, there were 7,609 undergraduates and 1,392 postgraduates enrolled at the college.

MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, donated $40 million to Morgan State in 2020.

This is not the first time that the college has faced shootings around the time of homecoming.

In October last year, one student was shot during an unsanctioned homecoming party outside university’s student center, reports the Baltimore Banner.

A year before that in 2021, another student was shot during a fight during homecoming celebrations.
