The toxic fumes can be seen rising high into the air over Derrimut before spreading out across nearby suburbs.
Residents in the following suburbs have been told to shelter inside immediately: Albion, Braybrook, Brooklyn, Derrimut, Laverton North, Sunshine, Sunshine West, Tottenham and Truganina.
