Thousands of mourners have paid tribute to South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens’ youngest son, Charlie.
Charlie Stevens was on Beach Road at Goolwa Beach, about 67 kilometres south of Adelaide, for an end-of-school celebration when he was allegedly struck by a car at 9pm on Friday.

The 18 year-old died about 7pm (7.30pm AEDT) on Saturday, surrounded by family and friends.

He’s being remembered as a young man with the rest of his life to live, sadly taken too soon.

Known affectionately as Stevo, Charlie was warm, charismatic and friends with everyone.

His wide friendship group was apparent online, where tributes were posted far and wide.

“Our memories will stay with us together, love you heaps,” one friend wrote.

The talented footballer began playing at the Mitcham Football Club where he played 100 games.

His junior team paying homage to him online, describing him as a “cheeky and courageous” player.

Charlie moved to the Unley Jets before finishing his playing days with the Goodwood X.

“Charlie has always been an effervescent presence and a pleasure to coach, and well loved within and outside his team,” a message from the club read.

His older brother Tom, who is just three years older, called Charlie his “best mate, biggest rival and number one fan”.

”It breaks my heart (that) my days of being a big brother have come to an end,” he said.

The charges against Dhirren Randhawa, the driver allegedly behind the crash, have been upgraded.

He is now accused of causing death by dangerous driving and will face court tomorrow.

The 18-year-old is also charged with leaving the scene of the crash, which happened while Charlie was celebrating Schoolies at Goolwa Beach.

It is the first death to occur during Schoolies in South Australia.
